Clover is a POS and payments platform owned by Fiserv, distributed in Australia through banks — NAB, Westpac, CommBank, and others. The bank handles the merchant account and payments side. What the bank doesn’t typically provide is professional on-site installation: correct network configuration, printer setup, app configuration, and end-to-end testing before your first service. That’s where venues often run into problems in the first days of trading.

This guide covers what’s actually involved in getting Clover properly installed at an Australian hospitality venue.

ℹ️ How Clover reaches Australian venuesUnlike Lightspeed or Square, you can’t buy Clover directly as a standalone product in Australia. It comes bundled with a merchant services agreement through a bank or ISO. The hardware is delivered to you — but the installation is your responsibility unless you arrange professional setup separately.

What you need before installation day

  • Clover merchant account approved and active — this is done through your bank or provider. Account approval can take 5–10 business days. Don’t schedule installation until you’ve received confirmation that the account is active and payments can be processed.
  • Clover hardware delivered and unboxed — Clover Station (Solo or Duo), Clover Flex handhelds (if applicable), and any additional peripherals. Check everything is present before installation day.
  • Compatible receipt and kitchen printer — Clover supports Star Micronics and Epson network printers for kitchen and receipt printing. Check Clover’s hardware compatibility list before purchasing third-party printers.
  • Business-grade router and network switch — Clover is cloud-dependent; consumer routers are not appropriate for a venue POS environment. A managed switch and dedicated POS network are required for reliable operation.
  • Internet connection active and stable — Clover requires a working internet connection to operate. If the venue is still under fit-out, ensure internet has been installed and is working at least 48 hours before installation day.
  • Menu built in Clover dashboard — log into dashboard.clover.com and build your full menu — categories, items, prices, modifiers — before installation day. This is the single most impactful preparation you can do to shorten installation time.
  • App Market subscriptions decided — if you’re using third-party apps (table management, loyalty, delivery integration), identify and subscribe to these before installation day so they can be configured and tested during setup.

How a Clover installation works — step by step

1

Network setup

Business-grade router configured with a dedicated SSID for Clover devices, separated from customer Wi-Fi. Static IP reservations set for all printers in the router’s DHCP settings. Ethernet cables run to Clover Station locations where possible — the Clover Station has an ethernet port and a wired connection is significantly more reliable than Wi-Fi for a fixed-counter POS. 4G failover configured if applicable.

2

Clover device activation

Each Clover device is powered on and activated by logging into the Clover account associated with your merchant ID. The device downloads any pending software updates — this can take 15–30 minutes on a new device and must complete before configuration begins. Never skip the update step.

3

Printer configuration

Receipt and kitchen printers connected to the POS network, assigned static IPs, and added to each Clover device in Settings → Printer. Print roles configured — receipt printing and kitchen printing are set up separately. A test print sent from every Clover device to every printer before moving on.

4

Clover Flex pairing (if applicable)

Handheld Clover Flex devices paired to the Clover Station via the station’s Settings → External Payment Devices. Each Flex is updated (separately from the Station), signed into the venue’s Clover account, and tested for payment processing before being considered ready for service.

5

App Market configuration

Third-party apps from the Clover App Market — table management, loyalty programs, delivery platform integrations, kitchen display — are installed and configured. Each app has its own setup process. This step takes longer than most venues expect, particularly for apps with complex configuration like table management or multi-platform delivery integration.

6

Staff accounts and roles

Employee profiles created in dashboard.clover.com with appropriate roles and permissions. Default Clover roles restrict refunds, discounts, and reporting access — these need to be reviewed and adjusted for managers before going live. PINs assigned and tested on the device.

7

End-to-end test

A complete test run: place an order, check kitchen print fires, process a $0.50 card payment on every device, print a receipt, run an end-of-day report. Every terminal and every printer combination tested before the venue opens. Payment processing verified with a real card transaction — not just a “connected” status in settings.

Realistic installation timeframes

  • Single Clover Station, receipt printer, no kitchen printing: 2–4 hours
  • Station + 1–2 Flex handhelds, receipt + kitchen printing: 4–6 hours
  • Multi-device venue with App Market integrations and table management: Full day (6–8 hours)
  • New venue with cabling and network infrastructure needed: 1.5 days — pre-visit for cabling and network recommended

Common Clover installation mistakes to avoid

  • Starting installation before the merchant account is fully approved — Clover devices can be configured but won’t process payments until the merchant account is active. Confirm approval before installation day.
  • Not assigning static IPs to printers — the most common cause of printer failures in the first weeks after installation. 10 minutes to do correctly, hours to debug when it fails during service.
  • Skipping Clover device software updates — new Clover devices often have significant pending updates. Installing apps and configuring the device before updates complete causes compatibility issues. Always update first.
  • Using the App Market app without testing before service — third-party Clover apps have their own setup requirements and failure modes. Test every app that will be used during service before the first day of trading.
  • Relying on Wi-Fi for the Clover Station — the Clover Station has an ethernet port. Use it. Fixed-counter POS hardware should always be wired where possible.
⚠️ Clover’s bank support vs on-site technical supportYour bank handles the merchant account, payment disputes, and billing questions. They do not provide on-site technical support for network issues, printer failures, or hardware problems. If your Clover system has on-site technical issues, you need a separate technician. HospoDoc provides on-site Clover support across Brisbane, Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get Clover POS in Australia?

Clover is sold in Australia through banks and financial institutions rather than directly — NAB, Westpac, and CommBank all offer Clover hardware as part of their merchant services packages. You apply for Clover through your bank, which handles the merchant account setup, payments processing, and hardware delivery. The bank does not typically provide on-site technical installation of the hardware or network configuration.

How long does a Clover POS installation take?

A Clover Station with one receipt printer and integrated card reader takes 2–4 hours to set up correctly, including network configuration and end-to-end testing. A venue with multiple Clover devices, a kitchen printer, and additional apps from the Clover App Market takes 4–6 hours. If cabling or network infrastructure work is needed, allow a full day or schedule a separate pre-visit for infrastructure.

Does Clover POS work without internet?

Clover has a limited offline mode that allows some transactions to be stored and processed when connectivity is restored. However, the offline functionality is more restricted than Clover’s marketing may suggest — certain transaction types, reports, and app integrations require an active internet connection. For hospitality venues where the POS cannot go down during service, a 4G failover router is strongly recommended as backup connectivity.
