Why your kitchen printer
keeps going offline —
and how to fix it
A kitchen printer that drops mid-service is one of the most disruptive problems a venue can have. Dockets stop printing. Chefs miss orders. Tables blow out. Here’s why it happens — and what actually fixes it.
Why does a kitchen printer go offline?
Most common causes, in order of frequency:
The printer loses its connection to your router — the most common cause by far.
Two devices end up with the same address. The printer gets knocked off.
Especially common after a POS update pushes new printer drivers.
A loose ethernet cable or a failing switch port — physical issue, not software.
Kitchen printers cop a lot of heat. Poor ventilation causes random dropouts.
Some models show as “offline” instead of giving a paper error. Check first.
What to check before calling for help
- Check the status lights on the printer — most models have a clear indicator
- Check paper levels and clear any jams
- Check the ethernet cable is firmly seated at both ends
- Check your router — is everything else on the network working?
- Print a test page from the printer itself to confirm it powers and responds
- Restart the printer, then restart the router, then check again
When a restart isn’t enough
If your kitchen printer drops offline regularly — even after restarts — the root cause needs to be found. Recurring dropouts are almost always a network issue: unstable IP assignment, a failing switch port, or a router struggling under load.
